signOur food, environment and rural affairs campaign focuses on communities, rural services, the rural economy and the productivity of the landscape.

sheepCentral to our work is an effort to ensure greater diversity in food production, to boost the rural economy and ensure the sustainable use of the land. The Alliance believes that food production is, and must remain, at the heart of the countryside's future. It is food production that links rural and urban communities and it is the hub around which so many other aspects of rural life centre on. Diversity of food production requires diversity of retail outlets and these can only be preserved if there are customers for them all and if heavy-handed inappropriate regulation does not stifle them.

breadRural communities do not need special deals or hand-outs. They do, however, need a sensible tax and regulatory structure within which they can function profitably. The Countryside Alliance engages with government at all levels to campaign for a reform of the regulatory burden which enables rural communities to sustain a sensible but profitable and enterprising existence.
