Much of the work of the Alliances moorlands campaign is carried out behind
the scenes to prevent or neutralise attacks on the interests of grouse moorland
communities or ecology: We have commissioned new independent research into the sustainability of moorland uses and part-funded a GIS based survey of moorland management We are using this research to promote a coherent moorland strategy to policymakers at all levels in England, Scotland and Wales We have initiated programmes of educational visits for schoolchildren, politicians and the general public We have researched the raptor issue and have been at the forefront of constructive debate with conservation agencies to find a solution to the problem of balancing raptor populations, moorland biodiversity and grouse populations on commercial grousemoors We have engaged in discussions with the police on a range of rural crime issues affecting moorlands and have represented rural communities interests and rights We have lobbied for properly planned and funded implementation of the new rights of open access on moorland We have worked closely with other organisations on specific projects - for instance conducting research into the damage done by accidental heather fires We have published numerous letters, articles and contributed to radio and televison on the whole range of moorland issues. Quarterly reports are published in the Alliances Campaign Update newsletter. We have also co-produced a DVD, A Big Little Business, to highlight and explain the social and economic benefits of grousemoor management. |
