Repeal is the only answer Countryside Alliance Chief Executive Simon Hart explains why repeal of the Hunting Act is the only option: You might have missed it but last week saw another significant landmark in the campaign for the repeal of the Hunting Act. Just as, shortly after the Act was passed, then Labour MP Peter Bradley’s statement that the Hunting Act was about “class war” was an admission of something that we had known for a very long time, another Labour MP has now confessed.

Image The Countryside Alliance's official support repeal facebook group was launched this week with great success - over 700 countryside lovers have joined up in the past 12 hours alone. The launch comes ahead of the Alliance's repeal website, which, when launched, will keep all those who sign up abreast of all the latest news on Repeal, hunting and progress we are making for your campaign. Both sites give supporters the opportunity to give their opinions on the Hunting Act and why it should be repealed.


 
UK is free of Avian Influenza

The UK is currently bird flu free, and hopes to remain soGood news from the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) on 20th November, as it declared that the UK is free of Avian Influenza. Defra's statement read: "The UK is officially free from Avian Influenza (AI) from today (20 November), according to the rules laid down by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). OIE rules require a three month interval between the final cleansing and disinfection of premises involved in the outbreak and official recognition of freedom from the disease." Taxing times for small businesses

The British Property Federation is taking a common sense approach The Countryside Alliance is supporting the British Property Federation’s petition calling for Government to repeal changes made to empty property rates. The new tax rates, implemented in April 2008, have increased the business rates paid by most types of empty property from 50% of the normal charge to 100%.

Shooting article in The Spectator

Many will agree with Alex's view that shooting is only as much fun as the people you are with Alex James, ex-bassist with the band Blur, now a farmer and eminent countryman, has written an evocative piece for The Spectator about a recent shooting weekend in Northumberland, in which he observes that "shooting is only ever as much fun as the people you are with."  A one-man game campaign, he writes “Game is about the best bargain going and it’s hard to think of how an animal could be more ethically reared”. He finishes the article with “…..only one question. Why would anyone eat chicken instead?” Read “Flying High” here.
