‘Rural Oscars’ – 2011 Wales winners announced

The Welsh Countryside Alliance Awards Champions of 2011 have been revealed at a reception at the Senedd in Cardiff, with four top local businesses taking Welsh Championship titles and qualifying for the Westminster final in March. The reception was held in Cardiff Bay on 11th January with the winners’ plaques being presented by Environment and Sustainable Development Minister, Mr John Griffiths AM.

The new Welsh Assembly Government

The Welsh Assembly election produced a Labour Government in Wales. Whilst the Labour Party fell short by one seat of an overall majority they have decided not to form a coalition with another party but to govern alone with 30 elected members. The First Minister, Carwyn Jones, has come under fire for not including the Minister for Agriculture within the cabinet

Roy Savage - a tribute

Countryside Alliance Director for Wales, Rachel Evans, writes: It is with a heavy heart that I write this in memory of Roy Savage, huntsman for 34 years at the Teme Valley. I first met Roy many years ago at the Countryside Alliance stand at the Royal Welsh Show. He was there supporting the Alliance with hounds in the pen, encouraging all who went within a whisker of the stand to sign a petition to save hunting from Blair's reign.

A Welsh Manifesto and film

Ahead of the Assembly elections on 5th May, the Countryside Alliance has sent a short film to all candidates, outlining the key issues from its Rural Manifesto. The film, which is in English with Welsh subtitles, is introduced by Countryside Alliance Director for Wales, Rachel Evans, and features commentary from those who live and work in rural Wales.

Fishing for Schools reels in Swansea children

The Countryside Alliance Foundation’s Fishing for Schools programme honoured the pupils of Morriston School in Swansea this week, following their successful completion of an innovative fly fishing course. The youngsters were taught by Fishing for Schools’ Charles Jardine, who made such an impression during the short course that he returned to the school to present the prizes.
