Fishing for Schools is a programme for 10–16-year-olds that uses fishing as a pathway to engage and inspire an enjoyment of learning and nature. 

Now in its 18th year, Fishing for Schools continues to make a difference in schools across the country – helping young people build confidence, learn new skills and connect with the natural world.

Countryside Alliance Ireland strongly rejects the flawed and deeply biased consultation conducted in support of John Blair MLA’s proposed Private Member’s Bill to ban the hunting of wild mammals with dogs in Northern Ireland. The flaws in the consultation are reflected in the recently published summary of the consultation process and findings.

This week (12-18 May) is Invasive Species Week. Of more than 2,000 non-native species introduced to Britain, 10-15% spread and become invasive, causing damage to our environment, economy, and way of life. The estimated cost of these species to the UK economy is nearly £2 billion each year, and includes costs of damage to infrastructure and industry, as well as costs of control. 

Farmers were understandably nervous about the announcement of a UK-US trade deal. First there was the fear that the UK market would be opened up to goods produced to lower standards than in the UK, such as the US’s notorious chlorine washed chickens and hormone-injected beef. 

The Countryside Alliance has submitted its response to the government’s  consultation on proposed amendments to The Heather and Grass etc. Burning (England) Regulations 2021, with a view to extending the existing restrictions on the controlled burning of vegetation on peatlands that have been in place in England since 2021.

Gen Z think (32%) farmers are the ‘best champion’ of the Great British countryside, according to a new poll. Farmers scored overwhelmingly higher than activists and environmental campaigners (12%), as well as politicians (4%), in new research revealed today.

Jeremy Clarkson also beat Chris Packham as the celebrity ‘best placed’ to represent the Great British Countryside, behind Sir David Attenborough in first place, according to those aged between 18- 27.
