  • 2nd Mrs Hurford from Axminster
  • 3rd Mr Boyce from Okehampton
Congratulations to our winners. If you would like to join the Lottery for just £2 per month please contact me and I will send you an application form. The South West Lottery is similar to a 200 Club. Each and every month there is a jackpot winner. By simply paying £2.00 a month (or £24 for a year's subscription) you could be that winner. You could also win one of our other cash prizes. A minimum of 50% of the income will be issued in prizes each month. The more people who join the more prizes there are! If you would like to take part please email me at alison-hawes@countryside-alliance.org and I will email you an application form by return.

Forthcoming Elections

As well as the Jubilee and Olympics, 2012 is also going to be a busy time for elections. These will be held in 131 English local authorities, all 32 Scottish local authorities and 21 of the 22 Welsh councils alongside elections for the London mayorality and the London Assembly. Later in the year, the Government has timetabled the inaugural election of directly elected Police Commissioners for November.

The Countryside Alliance has always encouraged rural communities to become involved in the democratic process so that our voices can be heard and local elections can be nearly as important as the general election. Please do take this opportunity to not only vote but to take part in the electoral process and have your views listened to by our politcians.

High Street Bank closures in rural areas

A debate in Westminster has been called by Roger Williams MP on High Street Bank Branch Closures in Rural Areas. This will take place this coming Tuesday. Once again the Countryside Alliance has expressed its concern for rural communities which face shortages in access to financial services, including high street banking. Through our membership of the Post Bank Coalition, we are calling on the Government to expand the services offered by the Post Office to include financial and banking opportunities. We believe that this will ensure the long term viability of the Post Office network by ensuring it meets the needs of small businesses and communities. A briefing has been sent to politicians ahead of the debate.

Taylor's Travels

The short-film series "Taylor's Travels" continues on CATV. Shooting Campaign Manager David Taylor recently visited Wensleydale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales to see firsthand how whippets are used to control the rabbit population.  The area, famous for its sheep farming, suffers greatly from rabbit damage to winter feed stocks, forcing the already hard pressed hill farmers to buy in more feed at market rates. In deep snow, a team of leading experts demonstrate how ferrets and whippets are used in combination to manage this serious problem. This latest film joins David's other travelogues, which cover grey geese in Northern Scotland, deer management on the Monadhliath Hills in the Highlands and wildfowling near Barrow in Cumbria. Watch David's films here.

Point-to-Point meetings

The Point-to-Point season is well and truly underway and of course for many hunts this is a major fundraising event run by volunteers and supporters of the hunt. I do not have room here to list all the meetings across my region each month but I suggest you go to www.pointtopoint.co.uk where all the fixtures are listed. Also worth a read is the Point-to-Point Authority's 2011/12 Season Magazine which is now available to view online here.
