Taylor's Travels continue

The short-film series “Taylor’s Travels” continues this week on CATV. Shooting Campaign Manager David Taylor recently visited Wensleydale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales to see firsthand how whippets are used to control the rabbit population. The area, famous for its sheep farming, suffers greatly from rabbit damage to winter feed stocks, forcing the already hard pressed hill farmers to buy in more feed at market rates. In deep snow, a team of leading experts demonstrate how ferrets and whippets are used in combination to manage this serious problem. View David's film on working whippets here

This latest film joins David’s other travelogues, which cover grey geese in Northern Scotland, deer management on the Monadhliath Hills in the Highlands and wildfowling near Barrow in Cumbria. Watch David’s films here.

John Humphreys & Josh Gifford

The Countryside Alliance is sad to report the death of John Humphreys. A lifelong countryman and CA member, John was a staunch supporter of the Alliance’s Shooting Campaign.

He used his weekly column in the Shooting Times to expose practices in shooting which others feared to raise, such as big bags and high birds. His contribution to the shooting community through his books and columns is immeasurable. Our thoughts are with his wife and family that he leaves behind.

Further sad news this week is that legendary trainer Josh Gifford has died. The Daily Telegraph reports on the CA member and legendary character: "Gifford, himself an accomplished rider who was crowned champion jockey four times, will be most remembered for Aldaniti's victory at Aintree 31 years ago after his jockey Bob Champion recovered from cancer.....As well as Aldaniti, Gifford trained a string of high-profile horses - notably Deep Sensation and Bradbury Star - during a career which forged over 1,500 winners."

We are sure all supporters will be thinking of Josh's family at this sad time. Read the Telegraph's report here.

Casting for Recovery's 2012 schedule

Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland, the unique outdoor programme specifically designed for women who have, or have had, breast cancer, has announced its 2012 retreat schedule and applications are now being accepted. The team will be visiting England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, the Republic and Ireland and Wales this year, spreading the charity’s particular brand of magical therapy.

The 2012 retreat schedule is as follows:

• 27-29 Apr - Brookhall Trout Fishery Event, Lisburn, Co.Antrim
• 27-29 Jul - Kimbridge-on-the-Test, nr Romsey, Hampshire
• 8-10 Aug - Mount Falcon, Ballina, Co. Mayo
• 17-19 Aug - Caer Beris & Llyngwyn, Powys
• 14-16 Sep - Forbes of Kingennie, nr Broughty Ferry, Angus

This innovative programme, the first of its kind in the UK and Ireland, uses a unique formula of fly fishing, counselling, and education to promote mental and physical healing to women whose lives have been profoundly affected by breast cancer. Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland has a reputation for choosing beautiful venues in which the lady participants can relax and 2012 is no different.

Any woman who has experienced breast cancer is eligible to apply to attend a retreat (with medical clearance from their doctor). Retreats take place over two-and-a-half days and all accommodation, meals, counselling, and professional instruction are provided at no cost to participants. Trained medical staff and fly fishing instructors are on hand at all times, the Countryside Alliance is a major financial backer and all fishing tackle and appropriate clothing is provided by Orvis UK.

Fly fishing is a gentle exercise which requires no strength and is exactly the sort of exercise in which recovering breast cancer patients can participate safely. Fly fishing also offers those on retreat a chance to reflect and escape in tranquil surroundings. In the UK and Ireland Casting for Recovery began in 2006 and over 250 women have now been through the programme over nineteen retreats.

Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland is unswervingly positive – it is using the countryside as a powerful therapeutic tool, and we can all agree that time spent in a rural backdrop is time very well spent. The programme also introduces ladies to new friends who can share their experiences alongside the trained medical staff who can talk to the ladies about their fears, the future and a firm focus on wellness.

The charity is now accepting applications online - ladies can apply to attend a retreat at www.castingforrecovery.org.uk

Event of the Week - Jackson-Stops & Staff CA Point-to-Point

The Jackson-Stops & Staff Countryside Alliance Point-to-Point will be held on Sunday 26th February 2012. Now in its sixth year it has grown to be one of the largest and most popular Point-to-Points in the country. Held at the beautiful Badbury Rings near Wimborne, Dorset, the day provides some of the most exciting horse racing of the season and consistently attracts record entries. The event's huge success is also based on its family appeal with countryside activities, have-a-go areas for children, country crafts, local food stalls and new for 2012 an enlarged shopping village. Countryside Alliance President, Baroness Mallalieu QC and Executive Chairman Sir Barney White-Spunner will be at the event to meet supporters and enjoy the day.

Richard Fry, the event’s Chairman commented: “We have made some changes to the layout this year which means the event will be bigger and better than ever. We are particularly grateful to our long term sponsor Jackson-Stops & Staff whose support has enabled us to grow the event and also to make worthwhile donations to local charities over the years.”

The site for the Point-to-Point is renowned as one of the best in the country with excellent viewing as well as spectacular views across one of the most beautiful parts of Dorset.

“This is not just a local point-to-point either” added Fry, “it now draws from the whole Wessex region including Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Devon and attracts crowds from both town and country such is its popularity”.

Julian Bunkall and James Wilson, Directors of Jackson-Stops and Staff, the events major Sponsor, were equally enthusiastic “this is a unique day out in a glorious rural setting and the many friends and clients we invite enjoy themselves immensely. We are especially proud to be sponsoring this point to point for the fifth year as it epitomises everything that is good about our countryside.”

The charity chosen as recipients for 2012 is the Weldmar Hospicecare Trust. The Trust offers care for patients with cancer and other progressive conditions requiring specialist help across south and west Dorset either in their own homes or as in patients at Joseph Weld Hospice.

Gates and Shopping Village open 9am, Terrier Racing 10am, Hound Parade 10.30am. First Race 12 noon. Picnics welcome!
