Alliance Successfully Opposes Minimum Age

The Countryside Alliance successfully defended young guns by opposing a Bill that would impose a minimum age of 14 for a shotgun certificate. In a report produced by Countryside Alliance, it was shown that young people with certificates pose no threat to society, as claimed by MP Thomas Docherty. Shooting Campaign Manager David Taylor faced Mr Docherty on BBC Radio Four’s Today programme, where he could prove no justification for this Bill. The Bill was not debated and is unlikely to be revisited this session.  A summary of the report can be found here.

Part of the twenty-three recommendations made, is a restriction on firearms use for young people.

Defending the Licensing System

2012 started off with the tragic shootings in Peterlee. The media immediately jumped on the fact that Mr Atherton was a certificate holder, and questioned the firearms licensing system. The Countryside Alliance were on hand to defend the shooting community in the media including BBC News at 6, BBC News at 10, BBC Radio Five Live and many regional stations. Read our statement here and our response to a statment from Downing St here.

GCSE in Shooting

The Countryside Alliance is pleased to hear that after giving their support to a pupil’s application, the examination board OCR has accepted that air pistol shooting could be taken as part of a GCSE in Physical Education.  After initially refusing to accept the discipline as a sport, the exam board acknowledged that shooting could be part of the course.
