Friday, 18 May 2012 You are invited to join us at the Macdonald Holyrood Hotel in Edinburgh on Monday 28th May for ‘SAC Rural Question Time’, being held to launch the SAC Rural Policy Centre’s new report Rural Scotland in Focus 2012. The report sets out the economic, social and demographic characteristics of rural Scotland, how these are changing and the implications of these changes for policy and practice. Read more
Wednesday, 9 May 2012 The Bracken Control Group reports: Aerial bracken control will continue to take place in 2012 despite the introduction of additional constraints. A new system for approving aerial spraying will be in place for the 2012 season and it provides for a 5-year permit on each landholding. Although this is a simpler and much improved system it is, as yet, untested. The regulations require final parliamentary approval before they can come into force and may not be operational until June. Read more
Friday, 27 April 2012 Scottish Natural Heritage and the respective industry groups, including the SCA as a stakeholder, came together to develop the code of deer practice last year. The code came into force on 1st January and should be adhered to by all who have, or may have, any deer on on their land. We are appealing to farmer members especially to get involved as it appears they are not taking on board that some of the deer issues and road traffic accidents, especially in the lowland regions, are the result of deer coming from their land whether it's small farm, large farm, estate or hill ground estate. Friday, 27 April 2012 The SCA attended a conference on wildcats earlier this week in the Cairngorm National Park. This was the end conference on a study on true wildcats. The study period was managed by Dr David Hetherington, Cairngorms Wildcat Project Manager, and was centred on the Cairngorm National park Area, mainly using five estates within the park. It was established that there is a very wild element of cats within some of the area and various attempts at quantifying hybridisation are being looked at to assess the “true wildcat” the highland tiger. Thursday, 22 March 2012 The SCA this month welcomed the announcement of a new ICT initiative aimed at helping over 350 companies in thie Highlands and Islands to get online and make better use broadband. With a quarter of Scottish businesses currently not online, the new ICT business engagement programme - a collaborative project between the Scottish Government, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Business Gateway – will invest £864,000 in the Highlands and Islands, to help small and medium sized companies (SMEs) exploit digital opportunities.
