An update from Barney White-Spunner

Thursday, 25 October 2012

Executive Chairman Barney White-Spunner writes: I have been “on the stump” for most of the last two weeks, speaking in Somerset/Devon, Dorset, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Northumberland, Gloucestershire and The City. I have been very encouraged by the feedback supporters have given and think this chimes well with our latest hunt survey, which shows hunts in good heart at the start of the season. I very much enjoyed meeting everyone, and was struck by your commitment to your sports, your way of life and the health of our countryside.

Lead Up The Garden Path?

Friday, 28 September 2012

The Countryside Alliance’s position on lead ammunition has always reminded static. The same cannot be said for those that oppose lead. So far they have been unable provide enough scientific rigour on the impact of lead in the environment to justify a ban on lead. Instead, they have tried another tack, human health, to try and curtail the sales of game meat.

The Alliance, Number 10 and Defra

Thursday, 20 September 2012

Alliance Executive Chairman Barney White Spunner writes: I have had a busy and rewarding week talking to the Government. On Wednesday the Prime Minister hosted a rural affairs lunch which I attended along with representatives of other rural-interest groups. At the lunch I was able to make the strong point to Mr Cameron that rural mobile coverage is a vital issue and the 4G rollout offers numerous opportunities. I also spoke to the Prime Minster about other issues of importance to our members and supporters, including country sports.

Baroness Mallalieu's speech to staff on the anniversary of the March

Wednesday, 19 September 2012

Speech by Countryside Alliance President Baroness Mallalieu to staff and volunteers to mark the 10th anniversary of the Liberty & Livelihood March, September 2012: How should I start this? Ladies and Gentlemen? Comrades and friends? I think not. There is only one proper way and that is to repeat the quotation from Shakespeare’s Henry V that I first used in Hyde Park: “We happy few, we band of brothers”. For, 15 years ago, that is what we were and will always remain.

Liberty & Livelhood - reflection on the March which galvanised a nation

Monday, 17 September 2012

The Liberty & Livelhood March saw nearly half a million supporters of the rural way of life descend on London on Sunday 22nd September 2002. A global event, many of us have great memories of the day that saw the countryside show its strength in numbers. Much has changed in ten years, but memories of the day still resonate with 407,791 (if not more) of us who made the journey and stood up to be counted. March Director James Stanford writes exclusively for us about the event and how it all came to pass.

The Lowdown on Lead

Monday, 3 September 2012

The whole concept of the European Union may seem foreign to many British shooters. But whatever your views on the situation in Europe, it can and does have the ability to make significant changes to our lives. Politics and processes in the European Union can become extremely complicated, even for the professionals.

History repeating – classic BFSS posters show not much changes

Thursday, 30 August 2012

Head of Communications Jill Grieve writes: “The more we get together, the stronger we will be” – “For sport and sportsmen” – sentiments as relevant now as they were in the 1960s when the British Field Sports Society used them to recruit sportsmen. These posters are now part of a “Heritage” collection, available online from our online shop, the Countryside Marketplace.

Inspiring a Generation

Thursday, 30 August 2012

Every day on my cycle from Kings Cross to the Countryside Alliance’s office in Kennington, I pass an outdoor tennis court. For most of the year, the court lays empty, with leaves of the London plane trees collecting in the chain linked fence that surrounds the court. But some time during the summer, towards the end of June, the courts become a hive of activity every morning.

Glorious 13th

Friday, 10 August 2012

Every year on the 12th August many newspapers include articles on shooting, some positive, some negative.  This is unlikely to be the case this year. Not because the season starts on the 13th (as the 12th falls on a Sunday), but the event is most likely to get overshadowed by Team GB’s amazing success at the London Olympics.

Good luck Team GB

Thursday, 26 July 2012

Executive Chairman Barney White-Spunner writes: Tomorrow the curtain goes up on the largest sporting event most of us will see in this country in our lifetime - the London 2012 Olympics. It's important that we get behind every single athlete in Team GB, with special support from the countryside to those competing in rural-interest sports. So to the Equestrian, Shooting and Modern Pentathlon teams go our very best wishes.
