Countryside Alliance Chief Executive Simon Hart writes about the impact proposals to cut temporary polling stations would have on rural areas: The foundation of any democracy is the right of every citizen to cast their vote in person and in secrecy. The Countryside Alliance has launched its Rural Manifesto, which will be the focus of its campaigning up to the General Election. The Manifesto promotes changes in five key areas that will make a real and lasting difference to the countryside and is urging supporters to sign up to its aims. The Taylor Report is the latest in a long series of inquiries into the provision of affordable housing in rural areas. The Government has accepted the vast majority of its recommendations which, when implemented, will encourage the development of affordable housing and associated services in rural areas. |

The Countryside Alliance has called for a clear timeframe to the future of the Post Office network generally, and the Post Office Card Account specifically. The Business and Enterprise Committee published a report on the Post Office Card Account: Successor arrangements today, and noted that “There is very little time for the Secretary of State to come to a decision, but when he does so he must take the needs of POCA users, and of the community as a whole, fully into account.” |
