The Big Rural Discussion: 'the future cost of food' 24th April and 1st May Print E-mail

Image Following a successful tender to co-ordinate a discussion on behalf of SWAN about the Future Cost of Food in the region, the Countryside and Community Research Institute is convening two discussions concerning the impact of the Future Cost of Food on the region; these will feature key note speeches from leading academics in the region and discussants from community groups, with plenty of time for discussion and debate afterwards.

The dates and venues are below:

Event 1: 'Production and Distribution': Copthorne Hotel, Plymouth; Thursday 24th April 2008. (9.30 am - 4 pm)

Event 2. 'Communities and Consumption': Lackham College, Chippenham; Thursday 1st May 2008 (9.30 am - 4 pm)

Speakers will included Les Firbank from IGER and Henry Buller from Exeter representing academia with community participants from projects such as Levels' Best and the National Association of Small Shops. With Sir Harry Studholme and Michael Winter taking the chair at the different events.

Countryside Alliance Chief Executive Simon Hart says the RSPCA's stance on grey squirrels reveals an alarming ignorance about conservation and wildlife management: Yesterday's Daily Telegraph provided further evidence of the RSPCA's lurch towards an animal rights agenda. Rob Atkinson who enjoys the title head of wildlife science at the RSPCA attacked the culling of grey squirrels in Northumberland claiming that: "It's ethically dubious killing one species for the sake of another".

Lie of the Land wins a BAFTA Print E-mail

Image Congratulations to documentary film maker Molly Dineen, whose hard-hitting "Lie of the Land" won a BAFTA for Single Documentary at the BAFTA Television Awards in London on Sunday 20th April. "Lie of the Land" pulled no punches in exposing the decline in rural life alongside the character and tenacity of rural people, and this win shines a national spotlight on the British countryside's enduring appeal in the face of hardship.

Image The Real Food Festival is taking place at Earls Court, London, from the 24-27th April. It's a giant farmers market where you will be able to visit 500 mainly British small food and drink producers. Not only can you meet the people that reared the pigs, planted the carrots, milked the cows and crushed the grapes, you can taste their produce, learn about it, then buy it to take home. www.realfoodfestival.co.uk

Winnie leads London pig protest Print E-mail

Veteran campaigner Winnie Rocketing pig feed prices mean farmers are losing up to £26 on every pig produced.The industry is losing £6 every second = £3.6m a week. The National Pig Association held a rally in London on Tuesday 4th March to call for fairer prices for pig farmers and to hand in a 10,000 name petition. Kate Hoey MP honours Di Bell of Nettleton in Wiltshire Rural community spirit came to Westminster on Wednesday 6th February as the Countryside Alliance’s third annual Best Rural Retailer competition culminated in the announcement of four national winners and five commendations. Andrew Rees is a Best Rural Retailer Print E-mail

Andrew ReesCongratulations to Pembrokeshire butcher Andrew Rees who was, on Saturday 2nd February 2008, named as the Daily Telegraph Best Traditional Business in the Countryside Alliance's third annual Best Rural Retailer competition. Lincolnshire-based wool-graders CWG were highly commended.
 
The Telegraph devoted a double page spread in its Weekend section to the category under the headline "Trading on tradition helps rural refuseniks take country path to 21st century success." Telegraph Assistant Editor Andrew Pierce commented on Andrew "He is not just a butcher, but a one-man local food campaign.... He has been a pioneer of the local-for-locals ethos. Eat your hearts out Jamie, Hugh and Gordon, Andrew Rees was there first". Read on for the piece in full. Winners of the other three categories will be announced at a House of Lords reception on Wednesday 6th February 2008.
