A new Animal By Products regulation looked set to ban parts of carcasses like the gralloch left on the hill, which would have caused serious practical problems but swift action from campaigners prevented a bureacratic headache. |

The following provisions of the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 come into force on 1 October 2007. Part 2 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act establishes a new offence of using someone to mind a weapon and amends firearms law to tackle the misuse of imitation firearms and air weapons, and the assembly of primers for ammunition for criminal purposes. This part of the Act also contains measures in relation to the sale etc. of knives and other weapons and the power to search for weapons in schools, further education colleges and attendance centres. |

The Regulatory Reform (Game) Order 2007 came into effect on 1 August. This RRO has abolished the game licence in England and Wales (a licence is still required in Scotland) and allows the year round sale of game meat. |

The Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006, amongst other things, increases the age of consent for purchasing an air weapon to 18 and introduces a requirement so air weapons can only be sold or transferred via registered firearms dealers and on a face-to-face basis. The Alliance is in the process of responding to the DEFRA consultation on ‘Changes to Game Licensing and Game Management’. It has long been accepted within the shooting community that the 1831 Game Act and the legislation associated with it are outdated and no longer relevant.

The Second Reading debate of the Animal Welfare Bill took place in the House of Lords on Tuesday 18th April.
The Countryside Alliance has welcomed the concept of the duty of care to animals in the Animal Welfare Bill but urges a cautious approach from the Government to its secondary codes of practice. The Bill is enabling legislation, and secondary legislation will be brought forward at the behest of the Secretary of State. |
