Television cook and countrywoman, Clarissa Dickson Wright, is leading a campaign urging public bodies to buy and serve more British produce. The Countryside Alliance has revealed through the Freedom of Information Act that 89% of public bodies in the North East do not have a formal policy in place for sourcing and procuring UK-produced food.

Four Northumberland businesses are celebrating winning North East regional titles in the Countryside Alliance Awards and will now vie for a national title against winners from the rest of Britain.
The Countryside Alliance Awards celebrate the skills, produce, traditions and enterprise of the countryside through the characters who work so hard to make it tick. The Awards are run across 12 UK regions, with each region’s winners then going forward to the national finals, which will be held at the House of Lords in London on 18th March. Regional finalists were announced late in 2008, judging then took place and the winners have now been declared: |

The regional finalists for the Countryside Alliance Awards have now been announced, so read on to see if your favourite has made the cut and celebrate the best of the region. Judging will now take place, and regional winners will be announced in the New Year. Overall UK winners will be revealed at a House of Lords reception on 18th March 2009. |

Piercebridge Organic Farm Shop and Café in Co Durham was given a high commendation in the “Best Diversification” category at the Countryside Alliance’s national Best Rural Retailer awards ceremony in London on 6th February.
Countryside Alliance Chief Executive Simon Hart announced the award winners at a House of Lords reception, which was attended by cross-party Parliamentarians. All 46 regional winners from across Britain gathered to hear who had won a coveted national title. Although the overall award went to a converted pub in Surrey, the efforts of Chris and Liz Hodgson at Piercebridge were singled out for national recognition. |
