Fly-tipping – Scrap It
Fly-tipping is a huge blight across the UK. Although fly-tipping on public land in England decreased between 2007 and 2008, it still remains a huge problem in other countries and for private land owners. Unlawful dumping of rubbish robs an area of its natural beauty and spoils our enjoyment of our towns and countryside – it also costs taxpayers estimated £74 million to clear up. It can pose a threat to humans and wildlife and also damages our environment and delicate natural eco-systems.
The Alliance took a stance against the scourge of fly-tipping in 2007, launching our Scrap It campaign with the release of our Tipping Point report - a special investigation which uncovered the true extent of the problem across the UK. We then engaged in a six-month period of extensive consultation and campaigning in which we received the views of over 400 key stakeholders and members of the public – resulting in the publication of a Time for Action, our recommendations to Government. The Tipping point and Time for Action have been recognised as the most authoritative publications on fly-tipping to date.
Lord Rooker, 2007: “I compliment the Countryside Alliance on its report. It is first class…..nobody has done anything better.”
Having set the national debate in motion the Alliance continues to work in association with other stakeholders finding solutions to the problem of fly-tipping on both public and private land. For more information on the Alliance’s collaborative work please follow this link |

A new project investigating the extent and solutions to fly-tipping on private land
The Countryside Alliance has long been concerned about the impact fly-tipping has on communities. We put this crime on to the political agenda in 2007 with the launch of our 'Scrap it' campaign which uncovered the true extent of the problem across the UK and saw us publish our action plan to fight the blight. Since 2007 the Alliance has continued to highlight to Government the problems faced by landowners suffering from fly-tipping, put forward practical solutions and lobbied for change - read our Time for Action report for further information. |
