Disabled anglers will be hard hitThe Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, was challenged over the huge rise in rod licences for disabled anglers during Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons on Wednesday 30th April 2008. The visibly uncomfortable Prime Minister pledged to look into the 37% increase saying: “I will look at the facts…and see what has happened to bring that about”.

Casting for Recovery announces a Northern Ireland retreat Print E-mail

Image Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland, the unique outdoor-based programme specifically designed for women who have, or have had, breast cancer, has announced that its first retreat for Northern Ireland will be held at Brookhall Trout Fishery in Co Antrim from 19th - 21st September 2008, and is inviting patients from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to apply for a place. Retreats are provided at no cost to participants due to the financial backing of the Countryside Alliance Ireland, and include accommodation, meals, counselling, and professional instruction.

Sea angling licences unenforceable and bureaucratic Print E-mail

Image The Countryside Alliance has branded the proposed sea angling licence “unenforceable, bureaucratic and with no obvious benefit to the recreational sea angler”.

The Government has published a White Paper outlining the proposed contents of a future Marine Bill, and a sea fishing licence is included in the proposals.

New fishery laws need funding Print E-mail

fishermanGovernment plans to improve freshwater fishing and tackle fish theft in England and Wales need funds as well as new laws, according to the Countryside Alliance.

Fisheries Minister Ben Bradshaw today announced that the Government intends to use secondary legislation under the Regulatory Reform Act, the Water Framework Directive and other recent European measures to improve freshwater fishing across England and Wales.

Breast cancer patients to benefit through new fishing scheme Print E-mail

Image The England Ladies Flyfishing Association and the Countryside Alliance have joined forces to launch Casting for Recovery (UK & Ireland), a unique outdoor-based programme specifically designed for women who have or have had breast cancer.

Casting For Recovery will provide fly-fishing programmes at idyllic retreats around the UK and Ireland.  Any woman who has experienced breast cancer is eligible to apply to attend a retreat (with medical clearance from their doctor).  Weekend retreats are provided at no cost to the participants including accommodation, meals, counselling, and professional instruction.  Trained medical staff and fly-fishing instructors will be on hand at all times.
