« Casting for Recovery’s Kingennie kindness

Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland has only been a registered charity for a few months, and has only been running in this country for a few short years, yet in this time it has made a huge impact and inspired  support far beyond our hopes. This week supporters Andy Elliott and Paul Hawthorne completed an epic 250 mile paddle from Belleek in Co Fermanagh to Limerick City – Andy reports that he now has arms like Arnie, but is happy to have completed the challenge and, importantly, the money is still rolling in. Meanwhile, I was very happy to travel back to Forbes of Kingennie resort near Dundee last weekend with fellow CfR team member Sue Shaw to pick up a cheque for £5,000 from resort owners Gail and Mike Forbes, a welcome donation which will make a huge difference to our 2010 programme.

Casting for Recovery is unique. The charity provides fly fishing programmes at idyllic retreats around the UK and Ireland for ladies who have, or have had, breast cancer. Any woman who has experienced breast cancer is eligible to apply to attend a retreat (with medical clearance from their doctor) and we have welcomed ladies from all over the UK, from town and country alike. Retreats take place over two-and-a-half days and all accommodation and meals, as well as counselling, and professional fly fishing instruction are provided at no cost to participants. Trained female medical and counselling staff and fly fishing instructors are on hand at all times, the fishing tackle and appropriate clothing is provided by Orvis UK and financial backing is given by the Countryside Alliance.

At first glance using fly fishing as therapy for breast cancer may not make sense, but in fact it makes perfect sense. Fly fishing is a gentle exercise which requires no strength and is exactly the sort of exercise in which recovering breast cancer patients can participate safely. And those of you who enjoy your fishing can also vouch for the restorative, relaxing effects of a few hours on the water. It is the ultimate therapy, and those who have come on retreat, many of them first time fly fishers, have taken to the sport with enthusiasm and relish.
The generosity of supporters such as Andy Elliott and Paul Hawthorne, and of Mike and Gail Forbes at Kingennie make a massive difference to our ability to provide unforgettable weekends for ourlady participants – so here’s to them as well as to CfR’s future.
