Ainsty Farm Shop Beadlam Grange Local Food Award: Joint winners: Ainsty Farm Shop at Green Hammerton (http://www.ainstyfarmshop.co.uk and01423 331897) and Beadlam Grange Farm Shop at Pockley (http://www.beadlamgrange.co.uk and 01439 770303). Yorkshire Judge Jill Grieve, says: “We had a hard, hard time judging this category and in the end simply could not choose between these two businesses, so have opted to put them both before the national judging panel. Both are family concerns with eyes firmly on delivering fresh, local produce, educating the next generation about where their food comes from and being a focal point not just for the farming community but for the wider community too.”

Helen Metcalfe and her mum run Skelton PO Village Shop / PO Award: Skelton-on-Ure Post Office near Harrogate (01423 322409). Jill says: ”In the two years she has been running the shop Helen Metcalfe has turned it into the heart of the village community, increasing stock in line with customer needs, expanding to sell local produce, and providing a village hub that was previously missing. We heard from many of her admiring customers, including an eight year old and a pensioner, and all had the highest praise for Helen’s care and enthusiasm. Having met her we had to agree that Helen is a worthy winner and a real asset both to her village and to these Awards.”

Annette has done wonders for Nafferton with her shop Enterprise Award: Nether Lane Country, Nafferton, near Driffield (http://netherlanecountry.co.uk/ or 01377 241711) Jill says: “In just over a year Annette Rogers has built up a burgeoning handcrafts business using vintage and recycled materials. Her little shop is packed with home made treats and Annette also serves tea and cake in her garden, which provides a meeting place for villagers. Annette’s enterprising nature has provided a centre for this village, and not only is she contributing to community life, through her innovative fundraisers she is also raising much needed money for local charities such as the Nafferton Church Bells Fund. Annette took a chance in setting up this lovely enterprise and it is to her great credit that in such a short time it is already benefiting Nafferton as a whole”.
