Countryside Alliance Regional Director Barry Henderson, who leads the regional judging panel, commented: “Davenports Farm Shop has only been open a year and has already had a huge impact on the area. Building on their reputation as florists they have added local food to the list of things they are passionate about, and many of their customers have told us that they can’t remember what they did before!

Barry says: "Grantham’s is a consistently excellent shop which is also hugely popular. I went along to judge it but it was so busy that I could barely get inside – a great advert for the success, ethos and commitment shown by Mike Grantham and his family. This competition aims to celebrate the people as well as the produce, and Granthams certainly represents the character and dedication needed to add value to a community. I am delighted to recommend Grantham’s to our national judging panel.”

3. Best Diversification - Swan’s Farm Shop
Ffrith Farm
Treuddyn
Nr Mold
Flintshire
CH7 4LE
01352 770088
Barry says: "This is a diversification that goes from strength to strength. The farm shop opened in 2003 and was always something special – in fact, the customers are quite evangelical about the quality and taste of the meat, but the owners haven’t let the grass grow, so to speak. A larger butchery counter was added later, which complements the home made pies made on site. The addition of a nature walk in 2008 will set the seal on this outfit’s commitment to produce, environment and community – they want their community and visitors to appreciate the best of Wales and in doing so have become the best of Wales themselves. "

4. Best Traditional Business - S A Harrison Hardware Shop
1-3 High Street
Coedpoeth
Wrexham
Denbighshire
LL11 3RY
01978 721699
Barry says: "One nomination for this family run retailer described it as “refreshing to have a genuine service with staff who really care about their customers and the life of the community.” This sums up the category perfectly - and this hardware store has a loyal following based on customer service, attention to detail and a genuine interest in the DIY projects of the good citizens of Coedpoeth!"
