The Northamptonshire Committee and Regional Director Sara Rutherford are delighted to declare the Best Rural Retailers of Northamptonshire:

Best Local Food Retailer – Trendalls Butcher, Oundle. Sara says: "Martin Trendall provides a wonderful traditional butchery service in a great setting, but he is constantly looking at how he can develop for the good of his customers. His support for local farmers and local food is clear - he displays farmers' names in the shop so that customers always know what they are getting and how few food miles have been involved"

Best Shop / PO – Creaton Village Shop & Post Office, Creaton. Sara says: "This was a very run-down business about to close, but has been brought back from the brink and is now the hub of the community. Owners Sylvia and David Winter provide local produce and everything the village might want - but they swear that it really thrives because of the gossip!"

Best Diversification – New Lodge Farm, Bulwick, Corby. Sara says: "Simon and Sara Singlehurst have a wonderful ethic here. From selling lambs at the local market they now sell much much more direct to the customer. Diversifying their redundant dairy they now have a popular cafe and farm shop, but can still be found at farmers markets and also provide hog roasts. There seems to be nothing they won't turn their hand to!"

Daily Telegraph Best Traditional Business – Dodson & Horrell (animal feed), Islip, Kettering. Sara says: "This phenomenal business just keeps expanding. Still a respected 70-year old traditional animal feed supplier (including camel feed exported to the Middle East!), this is also now a clothing outfitters, a local food shop and much more. The village's Christmas celebrations are held at the shop and the staff all do their bit for local charities, meaning that as well as offering the best produce for man and beast, Dodson & Horrell is also central to its community and their animals."
