2006 Cheshire & North Wales winners Print E-mail

The North Wales and Cheshire judging panel, led by Countryside Alliance North Wales & Cheshire Regional Director Barry Henderson, are delighted to announce the regional winners for the 2006 Best Rural Retailer competition:

Best Local Food Retailer
Rhug Organic Estate
Corwen
Denbighshire
LL21 0EH
01490 413 000
http://www.rhug.co.uk/
Barry says: “Rhug were our regional winner last year as well, and this win is further confirmation of the quality, vision and excellence of the operation. The commitment to local food is second to none, and the quality of produce from the organic farm is matched only by the commitment to promote local food to the community. School trips, a forthcoming local food club, a farmers market, an exceptional butchery and, most of all, a warm welcome, make Rhug a worthy winner.”

Best Village Shop / PO
Spar
11 Castle Street
Llangoed
Nr Beaumaris
Anglesey
LL58 8AP
01248-810326
Barry says: “This shop has been refitted and rejuvenated in the last few years, and is very much the heart of the community. Local food is sold, the shop supplies the kit to the local football team, the elderly enjoy home deliveries and the shop continues to serve its community alongside the tourists in the summer months. They are innovative as well as practical and it is astounding that there is such fantastic range in such a small place”

Best Diversification
Churton Heath Farm
Bruera
Chester
Cheshire
CH3 6EW
01244 620420
http://www.churtonheathfarm.co.uk/
Barry says: “The Foot and Mouth outbreak made it necessary for Jim and Vanessa Stratton to diversify their farm. They have set up various diversification initiatives, including a bed & breakfast which serves food from the farm. They are now opening a butchery to supply their own beef and pork. This is an amazing example of something positive coming out of a bleak time.”

Best Traditional Business
Granthams of Alderley
68 Heyes Lane
Alderley Edge
Cheshire
SK9 7HY
01625 583286
Barry says: “This has been a family grocers for over 60 years with at one time four generations working there! At Granthams, old-fashioned service, knowledge and customer care have always been fashionable. Support for local produce is something that more and more people seem to be interested in now, meaning that Granthams is at the forefront of traditional retailing, with farmers, producers and customers being valued above everything else.
